How to create a mega menu on Shopify

Mega menus are drop-down menus to help your customers navigate through your store logically and seamlessly. They’re often sticky, and located at the top of your store. They’re super important - it’s a safe zone for your customers. It helps them get to wherever they want to in as little time as possible.

When you have a lot of products, your menu has to evolve from a simple link grouping, to a “mega-menu”. Mega menus often have multiple layers of drop-downs within each category and sub-category. From a development perspective, they get tricky as you make them responsive across different devices & also because the design / logic needs to be very considered.

Mega menus usually require a specific setup in the Shopify back-end (navigation, collections, tagging, theme settings, etc). So, as a first step, I recommend my clients do a card sorting exercise (tape menu items to index cards). Also, use a heatmap software (Hotjar), Shopify and Google Analytics to figure out what pages people do/don't click. Once that's done, we can bring your mega menu to life!
